Poland’s Security Policy after the Cold War

The three decades after the fall of communism in 1989 proved to be a good time for Poland’s national security. A sovereign Poland effectively reconstructed its foreign and security policy from ground up, following 40 years Soviet domination. She reorganized her treaty-based relations with neighboring states, consolidated own borders rejected old military economic alliances. Polish political transformation, although costly social terms, has made it democratic economically successful state, anchored NATO EU, regionally cooperative selectively engaged global agenda - occasionally “punching above weight”. This article deals key aspects post-1989 policy. It begins an analysis historical factors contributing continuity change this policy, stemming responses changing external environment evolving state sovereignty. detailed 1989, covers issues: path subsequent priorities as member Alliance, role USA approach collective security, last but not least, European Union. ends reflection on contemporary challenges confronting policy.
